School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-- Written in a straightforward but entertaining style, these two books describe the roles, responsibilities, activities, and occupations of mothers and fathers. The bold-face type and simple vocabulary make the books appropriate for young readers to handle independently. However in many instances, sentences are not completed on a page, but are carried over to the following page, presenting an unnecessary obstacle for beginning readers. Color photographs, frequently several to a page, are attractive and clearly captioned. The picture dictionary found at the beginning of each book is superfluous. The role of fathers as economic providers for their families is a primary focus in I Can Be a Father ; in I Can Be a Mother , the difference between human and animal mothers is touched on briefly. The parent as caregiver is given equal treatment and coverage. Both mothers and fathers are shown in different types of careers and occupations. Two worthwhile additions to the ``I Can Be'' series, and a fresh introductory approach to the two roles that most children will eventually fulfill. --Bonnie Wheatley, Emma Conn Elementary School, Raleigh, NCBook Details
