Children's Literature

Dylan takes the reader on a tour of his green tractor explaining the kinds of things a tractor can do and the responsibility of a tractor owner to make the tractor safe. Every day, whether working on the farm moving hay and cutting grass or working in the field removing rocks and plowing fields, Ethan takes time to check all the things that make his tractor work. Dylan shows the reader what it is like to work with a tractor and a trailer. Small inset text boxes reinforce or expand on facts given in previous pages. One such box explains the different attachments that can be added to a tractor. Dylan stresses how powerful his equipment is and how helpful it can be, but he also stresses the safety needs in being around a tractor. Helpful pages at the back of the book include a diagram of a tractor, a glossary, fun facts, web resources, a brief bibliography, and an index. The front and end flaps have tire tracks running top to bottom to add to the attraction of this "working" title. This is part of the "Working Wheels" series, which currently includes 30 titles. Series titles are included in the help pages. This is an excellent early career book for elementary collections. 2006, Picture Window Books, Ages 6 to 8.
