Children's Literature

With cooler weather, the short sleeves and shorts of summer are retired for a long-sleeve flannel shirt, longer pants and even a scarf. The young girl in this board book is headed out with a basket on a chilly autumn day; but, she is warmly dressed and her scarf (which the text claims is wooly) feels rather soft and smooth. She stops off at the pumpkin patch and picks up tiny smooth pumpkins to put in her basket. There are two shiny smooth ones for kids to touch. When she arrives at grandmother's house she is in for a treat—there is a warm pie in a crinkly and shiny pie tin. She puts her basket aside to have a great time with her friends jumping in the leaves that cover the ground. One of nature's truly amazing sights is the beautiful color that leaves turn in the fall. Her basket is now full of leaves, little pumpkins and a special treat. The woven wicker can be touched to get a sense of what a woven basket feels like. The pictures depict a very happy little girl enjoying a wonderful autumn day. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
