Children's Literature

Truck driver is the career of choice in this new addition to a series of books about various jobs. Doctors, teachers and airline pilots are some of the others previously spotlighted. This specific book presents a realistic, if brief, overview of the day-to-day tasks of these hard working people, including the not so enjoyable parts. Driving through snowy roads, encountering accidents and the keeping of records are just a few of those mentioned. With its one-sentence narratives on most pages, this book suits older preschoolers well. The print is highlighted clearly in black-and-white inserts on top of the photographs. This reviewer would have liked to see more gender and race diversity on those pages that included people with the trucks. Nevertheless, any young child who is a budding truck lover and full of a little imagination will easily put themselves in the driver's seat of these close-up, colorful photographs. 2001, Firefly Books, $14.95 and $3.99. Ages 4 to 7. Reviewer:Kathleen Orosz
