Synopsis
Could a woman be a pharaoh? Who was the crocodile god? Did Egyptians like parties? With stimulating answers to these questions and many more, I Wonder Why Pyramids Were Built is a perfect way to learn about the mysteries of ancient Egypt, now in a handy paperback format at an affordable price!
Heather Mason - Children's Literature
The pyramids are one of civilization's greatest mysteries. Why were they built? How were mummies made? These questions and more are answered in this book, one of the "I Wonder Why" series. Organized in an easy to read question and answer format, the book explains some of the more interesting facts about ancient Egypt. Some questions are straightforward like "Who ruled Egypt?" (The pharaohs.) Other questions are surprising such as "Why did women wear cones on their heads?" (As the cones melted, they gave off a sweet perfume.) While this is in no way a comprehensive look at this fascinating culture, the information it does contain is interesting and is presented in an entertaining way. The questions are filled with cartoonish illustrations that add to the overall enjoyment of this book. All groups of readers will like it, high level and low level readers alike. Teachers of world cultures or geography will also find it useful as a supplemental text. 2006, Kingfisher, Ages 5 to 8.
