School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-- A brief history of the animals roaming the Earth between one and a half million years ago and 15,000 years ago. Ten brief chapters discuss the many large mammals that populated tundra and forest. The text is clearly written and is accompanied by good, clear, full-color photographs and fair to very good illustrations (some are stiff and lifeless). Significant words appear in bold type and can be found in the glossary. Report writers should find enough information to satisfy; casual browsers will enjoy reading about some of the giants. Similar information can be found in Giants from the Past (National Geographic Society, 1983), which is well written and has outstanding color photographs and drawings. Libraries owning that volume will want to consider this one as an additional purchase. --Denia Lewis Hester, Dewey School, Evanston, IL
