Overview

From the author of Travels as a Brussels Scout, a hilarious road tour of the American South ‹ the good, the bad, and the kitschy dished up with a dose of very British humor.

Literary Review

Excellent....The prose is forensically cool, the humor bone-dry as Middleton sketches the idiosyncrasies of his colonial cousins.

Library Journal

Middleton, a British geographer and the author of four travel books, including Travels as a Brussels Scout, has written an engaging tale of his "saunter" through the American South (the book was originally published in England in 1999). The charming na vet of a British tourist confronted by all things Southern is the main source of entertainment in this book: Middleton is constantly surprised by the food, mannerisms, language, and provincialism. He starts his journey in Florida, proceeds by train to South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, and then travels by bus and car to Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, East Texas, Louisiana, and Alabama. Along the way, he takes many back roads, meets friends, and visits places such as Graceland, Dollywood, and lesser museums. He doesn't like much of what he sees, but his comments are always humorous and telling. Unfortunately, Middleton's British English hasn't been edited for an American audience. Still, this delightful book is highly recommended.--George M. Jenks, Bucknell Univ., Lewisburg, PA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.\
