Synopsis
Chambers (Institute of Development Studies, U. of Sussex) offers a collection of his writings on development, along with commentary. The ideas that he refers to in the title are social policies that can be put into action or developed in the future. Describing the world as "trapped in grotesquely unjust systems," he uses fieldwork from his research in eastern Africa and South Asia, in addition to reviewing already implemented policies, to suggest ways in which the world can improve. Chapters describe how to use words and concepts, institutional change, and agency and self-reflexivity in global development. The second half of each chapter is commentary on the reprinted essays.
