Description: This is a collection of articles covering a variety of developmental disabilities and conditions which require early identification and assessment for optimal early intervention strategies critical to improved ultimate outcomes. Highlighted are a variety of identification techniques useful in screening all infants.
Purpose: The book provides comprehensive discussions of specific entities resulting in severe developmental disabilities.
Audience: It is of interest to developmental disability specialists, pediatricians, and a variety of therapists working with these high risk infants and children.
Features: Most of the 20 chapters are multiauthored and the book reflects the multidisciplinary nature of appropriate interventions required for optimal outcome in this population. Although there is no cross referencing between chapters, each contribution is comprehensive and provides appropriate tables and appendixes which enhance and summarize the detailed text. The chapter on nutritional assessment provides an excellent approach to any malnourished child with any disability. Similarly the chapter on infants exposed to cocaine provides important techniques applicable to any hyper-irritable infant. Hearing impairment in the very young and toddler is comprehensively covered in two chapters.
Assessment: This is an excellent compilation of articles on a broad range of developmental disabilities providing specific approaches to help identify and assess infants and children who require early intervention strategies.
