Children's Literature - Peg Glisson

The title page describes alliteration as "the same sound repeated at the beginning of two or more words in a phrase or a sentence." Succeeding pages demonstrate this in words and brightly colored illustrations. Alliteration is used in common sayings such as pretty as a picture and busy as a bee, in tongue twisters, and in poetry. It explores phonics and can even be used to tell a story. Brightly colored illustrations fill the pages and suggest excitement and playfulness, both of which are needed as children learn the power of language. Alliterative examples are highlighted in the big, colorful words throughout and demonstrate how alliteration adds a playful punch to writing. The last page suggests readers create an acrostic poem using their name and alliteration. Teachers will welcome this title as well as others in the "Word Fun" series, using it for large group instruction or centers work. Back matter includes a glossary, an index, and print and online resources. Reviewer: Peg Glisson
