From The Critics

Reviewer: Neva L Crogan, PhD, APRN, BC (University of Arizona College of Nursing)
Description: This is the third edition of a nutrition textbook that emphasizes practical applications and treatment of nutrition-related disease. This book, first published in 1994, can serve as a primary nutrition text or resource manual.
Purpose: According to the authors, the purpose is to provide the beginning student with an understanding of the fundamentals of nutrition related to the promotion and maintenance of optimal health. Nutrition science and practice is a rapidly changing subject area, thus updated textbooks such as this third edition are needed. The author's are successful in their attempt to write and develop an updated and revised version of their very popular nutrition education textbook.
Audience: According to the authors, this book was written to meet the educational needs of nursing students, dietetic assistants, diet technicians, and others. I agree that the book provides the avenue by which nursing students can learn about nutrition and its application and relevence to disease prevention and health promotion. The authors are credible based on their educational backgrounds and experience in the field of nutrition.
Features: This edition has been extensively updated and contains one new chapter entitled Complementary Therapy: Botanical Remedies and Ergogenic Aids. This edition also incorporates the standardized nursing terminology of NANDA, NIC, and NOC into each chapter's nursing care plans to show its usefulness in many different settings. The book is organized into three units: The Role of Nutrients in the Human Body; Family and Community Nutrition; and Clinical Nutrition. Subjects are fully supported by color diagrams, illustrations, figures, and tables. The book also includes study aids, case studies, clinical application topics, critical thinking questions, Web sites, an extensive glossary, multiple appendixes, teaching aides and sample questions. The only shortcoming is the small font size of the print.
Assessment: This is a much needed new edition of a very popular nutrition education textbook. Nutrition science and its application to health is a rapidly changing field of study. This new update is needed to provide nursing and dietetic students with current nutrition information on the state of the science. This version is an improvement from past editions.
