School Library Journal

Gr 2-4-In these brief, basic introductions, virtually every page includes a color photograph or diagram and a brief fact box or caption. The texts focus on how these rocks were formed, and some of their possible uses. A note to adults states that the "clear picture/text correspondence" of the series is intended to "put the reader in charge." The color photographs are sharp and the illustrations are informative, but some of the layouts are busy and may confuse children. With each title averaging about 400 words (or nine paragraphs), these volumes could easily have been consolidated into one book. Purchase only if you are desperate for curriculum-related information on these topics.-Michael Giller, South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, Greenville Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
