School Library Journal

Gr 8 UpA timely revision of a 1990 title (Greenhaven). Factors that lure and deter illegal immigration are examined. There is a strong emphasis on California's Proposition 187. The articles debunk the theory of a "flood" of illegals, citing many sources that estimate the number as 3 to 4 million, or only 1.5% of the population. Fear that sanctions against illegal immigrants will rebound and affect legal immigrants is discussed. The call for a national identification system is seen as a problem in itself. Plyler v. Doe, giving illegals the right to public education, is another facet of this complex topic debated here. Ways to prohibit border crossings and their costs are weighed against the cost of benefits being paid to these people. All in all, this is a good choice for facts and statistics, pros and cons, and questionable issues regarding illegal immigration.Marilyn Fairbanks, East Junior High, Brockton, MA
