Patterson (architecture, U. of Oklahoma) sets out to clarify the sections of the </2000 International Building Code/> that are most useful to designers, detailers, estimators, and students. He does not address specifiers or engineers, and warns that his account is not a substitute for the code but an aid to understanding it. He disclaims any sponsorship or approval of his efforts by the International Code Council, Inc., which owns the code itself. Illustrating how provisions are manifested in specific building projects, he examines the use and occupancy classification, heights and areas, types of construction, fire- resistant-rated construction, means of egress, and other areas.
