From The Critics

Reviewer: Paul D. Russ, M.D.(University of Colorado Health Sciences Center)
Description: This book about the female and male pelvic floor ntegrates the radiological and clinical aspects of pelvic floor anatomy, pelvic floor relaxation disorders, urogenital dysfunction and anorectal dysfunction.
Purpose: This book is intended to be multidisciplinary, with an emphasis on imaging. It is well structured with an orderly progression of topics. Conventional imaging is reviewed, as well as state-of-the-rt ultrasonography and magnetic resonance. The many excellent illustrations complement the text, making it an effective teaching tool and resource.
Audience: It is written for radiologists and clinicians. The imaging takes precedence, but this is the editors' intent. The integration of significant clinical information is successfully achieved. This is an excellent book for physicians in training and practitioners. The authors are subspecialists in radiology, urogynecology, reconstructive pelvic surgery, and colorectal surgery. The quality of the information makes it obvious that the authors are experts in these areas.
Features: "Embryology, anatomy, and physiology are covered first. A detailed discussion of imaging then follows. The next section reviews the radiographic and clinical aspects of urogenital disorders, emphasizing urinary incontinence and organ prolapse in females. The last section covers anorectal dysfunction, including rectal prolapse, intussusception, and fecal incontinence. The many anatomic pictures and the large number of excellent radiographic images contribute significantly to the quality of this book. Some details are discussed and illustrated repetitively, otherwise there are few shortcomings to this book. "
Assessment: This is a unique contribution to the field of pelvic floor imaging. It systematically covers topics that are infrequently addressed in other publications. This book does an excellent job in bringing together and presenting a wide range of relevant, up-to-date information about pelvic floor disorders. The content is not only substantial, but useful.
