Overview

Imagining Brazil provides a comprehensive and multifaceted picture of Brazil in the age of globalization. Privileging diversity in relation to the contributors as well as the manner in which Brazil is perceived, Jesse Souza and Valter Sinder have assembled historians, political scientists, sociologists, literary critics, and scholars of culture in an attempt to understand a complex society in all its richness and diversity. Rising from one of the world's poorest societies in the 1930s to the world's eighth largest economy in the 1980s, Brazil can be seen as an example of how globalization impacts peripheral societies and the serious social problems that generally plague these societies. Imagining Brazil explores the connections between society, politics, culture, and literature, creating a comprehensive volume that is of interest to scholars of Latin American studies and globalization.

Latin American Studies

This collection brings together a wide array of (mostly) Brazilian authors, from various disciplines, who focus on different aspects and moments of Brazilian society, polity, culture and literature....The authors make clear at the outset that their intent was to provide a 'comprehensive and multifaceted picture', and to privilege 'diversity' both in terms of authorship as well as topic coverage, an aim that is broadly acheived.

Luso-Brazilian Review

Like most edited collections, the fourteen essays in this volume are of varying quality and depth, although most of them are very fine contributions. especially to our understanding of intellectuals and ideas in Brazil in the twentieth century. The diverse disciplines of contributors also reflects the breadth and quality of scholars working on Brazil today in Brazilian academia.
