School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up-- There are no surprises in style, content, or format in this addition to the series. Bender traces the history of U. S. attitudes toward immigration from 1845 to the present under the general headings of historical debate, how immigrants affect America, immigration policy, illegal immigration, and helping newcomers adapt to the U. S., all neatly surrounded by abstracts, questions to think about, bibliographies, chronologies, and other textbookisms. This series is the answer to a report writer's prayers. With its multiple chapter subheadings, explanatory background paragraph in each section, and extensive bibliographies, it is possible to write a creditable report without ever reading the documents that comprise the text itself. But for serious students, the information is here in good and thought-provoking order. Given the recent attention to the subject of U. S. immigration and its attendant problems in some parts of the country, this title is one that may see some use in addition to class assignments. --Trish Ebbatson, Delaware County District Library, OH
