From Barnes & Noble

The Barnes & Noble Review
Sure, it’s easy, but the conventional wisdom is that iMovie is just a toy. To do any serious video work, you need Final Cut Pro. That’s what we thought, too -- until we read iMovie 2 Solutions: Tips, Tricks, and Special Effects, by Erica Sadun.

To start with, iMovie 2’s a lot more powerful than “iMovie 1” was. Add to that the “not especially obvious” features that Sadun uncovers. Spend $29.99 on QuickTime Pro, then add a little dirt-cheap shareware from the accompanying CD-ROM, and iMovie 2 really shines. (Imagine adding logo and watermarks to your movies, creating picture-in-picture effects, adding streaming subtitles, adding custom skins around your movies -- all for maybe 5 percent of what FCP3 would cost you.)

This book introduces a truly amazing collection of techniques. Overlays. Transparencies. Animated effects, from stock tickers and overmasking through flying stripes. Imported PowerPoint slides. Even PBS documentary effects (think Ken Burns’s The Civil War).

Don’t you love it when you discover you can do amazing stuff, amazingly easily -- for next to nothing? You’ll love this. Bill Camarda
