The allusive concept of impressionism is presented in its many aspects much like the colorful dabs of paint employed in impressionist art. Through an attempt at definition, a discussion of early influences on the students of the new art, a focus on the new way of painting and new subject matter, and a close look at the individual painters and their works, the book gives a vibrant introduction to a fascinating subject. The generous photos of artwork, actual scenes in late nineteenth century Paris, and maps and memorabilia are arranged with captions around focal topics. One can read the book from front to back or pick out a chapter, page, or picture at random much like viewing an art exhibit. Examples of topics include--the impressionist palette, the eye of the camera, the age of the train, Monet and the Seine, Renoir at the Moulin, and Cassatt's color prints. The book ends with key biographical dates, a list of artists at the impressionist exhibitions of 1874 to 1886, a list of where the paintings in the book are exhibited, a glossary, and an index. This is a fine example of the "Eyewitness Books" series. 2000 (orig. 1993), DK Publishing, Ages 12 up, $15.95. Reviewer: Carol Raker Collins
