Publishers Weekly

This mixed-media board book has an organic, arts-and-crafts quality. Die-cut pages form wavy contours that mimic ripples; inside the "pond," attached to the book's last page, is a yellow and orange fabric fish finger puppet. Readers can wiggle the fish as it describes its home: "In my pond there are shiny stones... lily pads floating on splashy blue water." The layered pages surrounding the pond and smiling fish have collage-like patterns that range from woven to Chinese type to topographical maps. In all, this book is a delicate gem. In My Nest is also available. Ages 6 mos.-4 yrs. (May)

Kirkus Reviews

Taking "interactive" to the next level, Gillingham has designed a board book that incorporates both diecuts and a fabric fish fingerpuppet to engage baby listeners. "In my pond there are shiny stones, / tall, waving grass, / lily pads floating," and so on, as each page turn takes readers through increasingly smaller irregular diecuts while a parental finger wiggles a happy goldfish from behind the book. Siminovich supplies collaged backgrounds of harmoniously colored printed and painted cut paper that contrast cheerily with the orange fish. In My Nest (9780811865555) does a similar service with a little blue bird; each ends with its protagonist happily joined "with my family!" It's a beguiling gimmick, one that should please both adults and babies again and again. (618 mos.)
