Children's Literature -
This generously illustrated book shows youngsters how to explore the woods in a way that is edifying and fun. Not for the timid, however, it invites kids to follow animal tracks; to touch bark, cones, moss; to dig for and trap (temporarily) bugs and salamanders; and to eat plants and berries. It includes games like trail marking and crafts like mushroom printing that would appeal to very active and to more artistic children. The detailed drawings, accurately depicting the flora and fauna as well as the things that children can make, provide the necessary visuals (only the lantern craft remains a mystery). Though warned about poisonous mushrooms, bears, poison ivy, etc., children are encouraged to get to know the woods without harming themselves or the habitat. Nevertheless, because of the dangers inherent in woods exploration and in the suggested crafts (e.g., cutting tin cans, use of matches), some of the activities are not appropriate for younger kids. Close supervision of all projects and expeditions by responsible adults is strongly recommended. A list of field guides at the back of the book offers opportunities for more in-depth study for both Americans and Canadians. Part of a "See, Make and Do" series.Book Details
