Publishers Weekly -
Segal writes from the perspective of her own experiences as the mother of a handicapped child and as a developmental psychologist. In addition, she interviewed parents at the Family Center, Nova University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., which offers counseling on the myriad problems of caring for babies with ailments generally termed ``difficulties.'' The book is an empathetic and thorough source of advice on parenting special children and their siblings, who also need help to live with a physically, mentally or otherwise handicapped brother or sister. The text is divided into sections detailing programs that encourage slow babies to gain motor skills, learn words, play constructively, etc. Appendixes offer information on publications, associations, diagnostic centers and other sources of guidance on autism, Down's syndrome, cystic fibrosis, hearing and speech impairment, dwarfism and other conditions.
