Synopsis

34 million tonnes of municipal waste, 30-40 million tonnes of sewage sludge, and possibly 6 million tonnes of chemical and clinical wastes are produced in the UK each year. This comprehensive report deals with incineration and its role in relation to this waste. From their study the Commission has come up with 35 recommendations which include a national strategy for waste management; that a levy be applied to all waste deposited in landfill sites; that government should give targets to waste disposal authorities for the recovery of energy from municipal waste; and that waste disposal facilities should wherever possible be on sites which allow wastes to be moved by rail or water transport rather than road.
