From The Critics

Reviewer: Dana J Lawrence, DC, MMedEd, MA(Palmer College of Chiropractic)
Description: This textbook discusses the basic scientific foundation for the creation and processing of head pain, examines the diagnosis of that head pain, and describes a thorough management protocol for treating a wide range of head pain conditions.
Purpose: The purpose is to synthesize current head pain principles, head pain patient models, and musculoskeletal integrative treatment rationales and techniques into a generic model of head pain management. The approach largely involves chiropractic interventions, but also incorporates some aspects of dental care. Because there are no such books within the chiropractic profession, this becomes a rather valuable new addition to the literature.
Audience: The primary audience is chiropractic practitioners and students. There will also be interest from conservative dental practitioners, osteopaths, physical therapists, and other conservative health care deliverers. The author is a known expert on this subject, and he has gathered numerous contributors, many of whom are equally as well known, if not more so.
Features: The book is well illustrated with radiographs, line drawings, photographs, charts, and tables. Many are of high quality, but some x-rays suffer in detail because of the untreated paper upon which they are printed. Each chapter is amply referenced with current citations.
Assessment: This book will likely become a benchmark text for use within clinical and academic settings. Although the area of coverage is certainly of interest to the chiropractic profession, there are surprisingly few texts or journal references specific to the profession. Thus, a real need is addressed by this book. It is fortunate that the coverage is so thorough. The information presented here makes logical sense, the diagnosis is built on previous information regarding anatomy and neurology, and management strategy is then built upon established therapeutic principles. This book will be of value for years to come.

Social, physical, emotional, and environmental stresses cannot fully explain the phenomenon of head pain. Eighteen contributions from Australia, England, Canada, and the US synthesize current principles, patient models, and musculoskeletal integrative treatment rationales and techniques into a generic model of head pain management. Among the topics: posture, classification of headaches, nutrition, diagnostic imaging, medications and chemicals, craniofacial orthopedics, and an overview of cranial manipulation. Annotation c.
