Reviewer:Laura Dobbins Beeks, RN, MSN(Medical University of South Carolina)
Description:This book provides detailed information about the physical and psychological development of infants and toddlers and includes information about common childhood diseases. There is an overall focus on preventative care.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide basic comprehensive health information to parents and the general public about the growth and developmental need of infants and toddlers. Safety tips, nutritional information and advice regarding common pediatric disorders are detailed and informative. The glossary of terms is helpful along with the immunization tables and detailed historical data regarding disease prevalence.
Audience:This book is intended for "basic consumers," but is written at a literacy level geared towards healthcare professionals. The basic consumer would have a difficult time comprehending much of the information and resource graphs (especially in relation to the Immunization Schedule).
Features:This book details the developmental, nutritional, and emotional needs of the infant to age three. It includes how to care for the neonate, common pediatric disorders, safety tips, and milestone assessments. It is a superb comprehensive resource, but some parents would not be able to understand much of the important information, especially in relation to pediatric disorders and the Immunization Schedule. A second edition with an eighth-grade literacy level is recommended to target a very needy parent population.
Assessment:This is an excellent comprehensive resource for consumers, but the literacy level is too advanced for some parents. This book as it is would be a great reference for nurses and residents in primary care and family pediatric settings. The cover should be more consumer friendly if parents are to he attracted to it. One suggestion is to use a photograph of a baby and toddler to attract a parent seeking a reference.
