Synopsis

The creepy crawlies we all know—and some we don't. We explore the amazing world of the insect, in alarming close-up.

Sally J. K. Davies - Children's Literature

This book provides a simple introduction to insects for young children. Each short chapter is a double-page spread filled with photos and a minimum amount of text. Chapter topics include an explanation of what an insect is, different types of insects, insect size, athletic powers, insect wings, camouflage, defense mechanisms, insect senses, insect mouths, food, insect hunters, the life cycles of insects, insect eggs, social insects, a honeybee hive, helpful and harmful insects, water insects, and glow-in-the-dark insects. Throughout the book, larger-than-life photos of insects supplement the sparse text. Photo captions and the text itself are set in a large, sans serif font. Along the bottom of every page runs a light colored band. Within this band, an unusual or technical word from the text is set in a bold font and gives a brief definition for the young reader. The final few pages of the book contain an idea for a science experiment, as well as a few craft projects and an index. This book is part of Kingfisher's "Young Knowledge" series, which includes the titles Animal Disguises, Animal Homes, Apes and Monkeys, Birds, Desserts, Maps and Mapping, Materials, Oceans and Seas, Planet Earth, Polar Lands, Robots, Rocks and Fossils, Senses, Solar System, and Whales and Dolphins. 2006, Kingfisher, Ages 5 to 8.
