VOYA -
If VOYA gave quality ratings for professional books, this one would rate a 5Q! Designed to take the novice to comfort and confidence in using the Internet with students, it is a course in itself. The authors give a brief history of the Internet and an explanation of how it works. They include a thorough discussion of e-mail, which includes how to search for addresses using graphic browsers. Explanations of the Web and file transference using FTP are offered. They are followed by a chapter on searching the Web, which covers Boolean operators, tools for text-based access, and the engines most encountered. Subsequent chapters deal with introducing the Internet to faculty and staff; net filtering and net filters; and acceptable use policies. There are hundreds of addresses throughout the book, including an entire listing of Web sites that are curriculum appropriate. The body of the book ends with basic information on how to get online and Internet access points. The four appendices provide a review of e-mail, FTP, and the Web, and more than fifty transparency masters. A glossary precedes two indexes, one of URL/e-mail addresses and one a subject index to the book. This book is a wonder! The number of addresses and links alone make it a sound investment. I recommend it for public as well as school libraries. Glossary. Index. Illus. Charts. Biblio. Appendix.Book Details
