Gr 3-5-A very basic overview for readers who know very little about the subject rather than instructions for using it. Full-color photographs provide reassurance that the Internet can be used by children of all races, sexes, and abilities, but they don't contribute much in the way of information. In fact, the sample screen of a Veronica search is a case study in locating irrelevant material. World Wide Web is discussed, but the illustration is of the text-only links browser, making the book somewhat out of date already. Still, it is the simplest approach to the Internet available. It teaches a basic vocabulary and can serve as an introduction to a class or to an individual. No precautions appear and none of the controversial aspects of the Internet are mentioned. The book will be best used with youngsters who ask what the Internet is and who can then be referred to more detailed books if they are interested in pursuing it further.-Carolyn Caywood, Virginia Beach Public Library, VA

In this New True book, Koehler uses comparisons with things children know (maps, the postal system) to explain what the information superhighway is and the various ways it can be used. E-mail, listservs, telnet, FTP, and information search strategies are each given separate chapters. This isn't a how-to book, though Koehler does contribute a little about how Gopher, Veronica, WWW, etc., work. Rather, it's an introduction to basic terms and facets of the Internet, which will make kids curious enough to seek more information elsewhere--on-line, in books, or both. The photographs are plentiful and in full color, and there are a few sample computer screens. The text appears in extra-large, sans serif type. Glossary.
