Overview
The fantastic flying feats of the courageous Wright Brothers, featured in the most heroic of formats-the graphic novel! It is early in the twentieth century, and, to most, the idea of human flight is ludicrous—with good reason. There have been many failed flying attempts. Still, the Wright brothers will not let their dreams die. They brave heavy winds and rain, sandstorms, and tough crashes—all in an effort to build the first successful flying machine.
In this engaging and dynamic graphic novel format, award-winning author Bob Burleigh has collaborated with Bill Wylie to re-create a gripping tale of trial, error, and, ultimately, triumph.

Gr 5-8-Although somewhat spare on detail and often jokey in thought bubbles and asides ("I don't know if he'll fly like a bird, but he sure has the brains of one!"), there is fascinating material here. In classic comic-book style, skewed panels-acute close-ups alternating with extreme long shots, cameo insets on top of panoramas-illuminate the story of the dogged twosome who progressed from simple, wooden fixed-wing flight, susceptible to the vagaries of the takeoff field, the wind, and the shifting weight of its prone pilot, to a fully mechanized machine, capable of extended and controlled flight. The high-interest format and high-interest story result in a winning combination. Although this book is long on fictionalizing conversations and thoughts, it's fine as an introduction for reluctant readers or as a secondary resource.-Dona Ratterree, New York City Public Schools Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.Book Details
