The focus of this edition remains on the care of patients with advanced cancer, with principles that are equally applicable to patients dying from other progressive disorders.
Purpose: According to the author, the book is designed to supplement the current body of knowledge concerning palliative care, through an extensive compilation of general topics, psychosocial aspects of palliative care, and symptom management.
Audience: This book, intended for palliative care education, is written in easy to understand language, and can be useful to students and healthcare professionals alike; social workers, chaplains, nurses, and any other multidisciplinary team members.
Features: The book is divided into six parts that cover general topics from palliative care statistics to terminology definitions; psychosocial aspects of care (i.e., spiritual, bereavement, care of family and children); and symptom management. Also included is a comprehensive list of drug names and commonly used abbreviations.
Assessment: This is a welcome addition to the field of palliative care.
