Overview

Giuseppe Verdi was born in early nineteenth century Italy, at a time when the country was struggling against Austria for its independence. He was the son of an innkeeper, but became one of the great masters of Italian opera. He composed works that were not simply collections of beautiful songs, but were great theatrical experiences. Among his many gifts was the ability to express the patriotism of his fellow Italians in music. Verdi's extraordinary career lasted 60 years, scaling new heights and taking new musical directions until his death at the age of 87.
