Description:This book provides a concise overview of essential maternity and pediatric nursing for the licensed practical/vocational (LPN/LVN) nursing student. This fifth edition (previous edition was in 2003) includes more content on health promotion during pregnancy as well as a new companion CD. The CD has animated and video clips of maternity and pediatric assessment that are excellent for the visual learner.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide essential, accurate, current, and clinically relevant information about maternity and pediatrics for competent nursing practice at the LPN/LVN level. It is meant to be a portable reference that can continue to be used by the student after completion of the program. This book definitely meets these objectives.
Audience:Although targeted at the LPN/LVN student, the book supplies enough depth that it also could be used by students who proceed on with their nursing education in a ladder program of study. One drawback is a lack of information about the background of the author since only her title is listed as associate professor of obstetrics, pediatrics, and trauma nursing at a California community college. The title alludes to expertise in maternity and pediatrics but is her MA in a nursing-related field? Does she teach in a LPN/LVN program? There is a similar lack of information about the background/expertise of the contributors and reviewers.
Features:The book covers basic aspects of normal reproductive anatomy and physiology, expected physical changes during pregnancy, labor, birth, and the period following birth. Nursing management and care of the pregnant individual, newborn, and the family is also included, as are the more commonly identified complications during pregnancy, post-pregnancy and newborn periods. The pediatric portion of the text covers each common childhood developmental stage (infant, toddler, preschool, etc.) and includes general characteristics, daily care, safety, and nursing implications for each stage. Cultural aspects and family implications are well covered in both the maternity and pediatric sections. The book includes many illustrations of skills and the companion CD shows animations and video clips of various aspects of maternity and pediatric assessments. These visual tools are especially helpful to the new learner.
Assessment:This is excellent as a concise, logical, accurate, and clinically relevant reference for the LPN/LVN student. The addition of the companion CD with animations and video clips of various aspects of maternity and pediatric assessments is a worthwhile addition to this fifth edition.
