Overview
This text is an introduction to the thermodynamics behavior of material systems, where a material systems is any assemblage of solids, liquids and/or gases which occupies space. The subject materials provides the criterion for the equilibrium state of existence of a material under a given set of external influences, e.g. under conditions of constant temperature and pressure. Extensively revised and updated the fourth edition provides an understanding of the fundamentals of thermodynamics and applies these fundamentals to an understanding of the behavior of real systems. The fourth edition contains a completely new chapter (14) providing a detailed description of phase equilibria in binary systems and a solutions manual will be available.Synopsis
Gaskell (materials engineering, Purdue U.) presents an introduction to the theory and application of the systems behavior of metallic and non-metallic materials. Chapters cover such topics as entropy, behavior of gases and solutions, various chemical reactions, and electrochemistry. The CD-ROM contains spreadsheet data and descriptive material for making thermodynamic calculations involving materials processing. This text is a revision of Introduction to metallurgical thermodynamics, 2nd ed. (1981). Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
