Overview

Invisible America is a visual guide to five hundred years of North American history and culture, from the 1490s to the 1990s, that uses artifacts of everyday life to tell long-neglected stories from our past. It weaves photos, text, and maps into lively two-page spreads that explore forgotten facets of life in each era of American history, from the pre-Colonial period to modern times.

Library Journal

Leone (archaeology, Univ. of Maryland) and Silberman (author of The Hidden Scrolls, LJ 10/1/94, and consulting editor for Archaeology magazine) use artifacts of everyday life to tell forgotten stories of America's past. Their work tries to do this by breaking the past into five periods of history (1492-1607, 1607-1780, etc.) and devoting two-page articles to various areas of interest in each era. Unfortunately, this format results in an inadequate examination of any particular area, and there is a tendency to reduce people to economic factors, thus losing sight of their humanity. A feeling for the human drama of history is lacking here. An optional purchase.-Robert A. Curtis, Taylor Memorial P.L., Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio
