Overview

Advances in information technology are changing the way we record history, communicate with others, entertain ourselves, and conduct business. As these increasingly more sophisticated tools and applications have become an integral part of our personal lives, they have also had a profound impact on larger aspects of society, in fields as diverse as education, medicine, commerce and law. To better navigate this interdependent information universe, it is vital to understand the nature and operation of these technical systems and tools as well as the ethical, cultural and societal issues related to them.

Technology 360 demonstrates how certain technology has evolved, transforming life at home, work and school. Each volume focuses on a particular invention or device, such as the cell phone or laser. Through careful explanations and insightful analysis, readers will learn about the device's development, how it works, its impact on society and likely future uses.

Full-color photographs, intriguing illustrations, visual timelines, and fascinating sidebars and fact boxes complement the text and hold user interest, while ancillary materials such as bibliographies and a subject index help users target their research.

School Library Journal

Gr 6–8β€”The main problem with this book is the speed with which the information provided will become obsolete. With technology advancing daily, books on such a topic seem like a waste of money. Online research would yield current information for students. However, if readers are looking for a history that follows the evolution of such devices, the history of music downloading, etc., or as a way to understand the effects they have had on our culture and our society, the book proves to be both useful and interesting. The author's explanation of podcasts, vodcasts, RSS feeds, etc. are helpful. Interspersed within the text are full-color photos, anecdotes, time lines, charts, graphs, and facts that help to liven up the subject matter.β€”Sarah K. Allen, Elko Middle School, Sandston, VA
