Synopsis
Citing the risk of weapons of mass destruction, in March 2003, U.S. and British forces (together with nominal support from several other countries in a coalition) began a military campaign against Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq. Although the official stage of combat operations ended within three weeks, numerous ethnic and religious factions began fighting afterward, both against the coalition forces and each other, for control of Iraq's government. Iraq War, Updated Edition covers all the background material necessary to understand the circumstances surrounding the invasion of Iraq. This newly updated edition also includes the latest developments surrounding the Iraq War, such as the resignation of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and in-depth analysis of media coverage of the war, as well as questions concerning whether the United States should maintain military operations in Iraq.
America at War provides readers with a clear understanding, in words and pictures, of the violent clashes that have shaped U.S. history. Each book in the set opens with an incident central to the conflict under discussion and then presents the war's major objectives and strategies, including significant innovations in weaponry and tactics. Also provided are details of the lives of both prominent commanders and common foot soldiers, as well as of wartime civilians; key battles are vividly described.

Gr 9 Up-The war is defined as the three-week military campaign beginning in March 2003 and ending with the capture of Baghdad in April 2003. Introductory chapters discuss events leading up to the invasion, going back to the breakup of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, Saddam Hussein's rise to power and the origins of the Baath Party, the Persian Gulf War of 1991, and September 11 and the subsequent actions in Afghanistan. The book concludes with a discussion of the occupation as of May 2003. Average-quality, black-and-white photos appear throughout. There are a number of sidebars on subjects such as the famous deck of cards featuring pictures of major wanted Iraqi leaders, the hunt for WMDs, and the Al-Jazeera news agency. The analysis of this controversial war is fairly evenhanded, but the tone of the book is dry and academic. Purchase this detailed and thorough treatment where additional materials on this subject are needed.-Kathleen E.
