Children's Literature

Ellie Brown returns to the Royal Ballet School for her second term, expecting nothing but happy relationships with her fellow students and continuing improvement in her own dancing. But a new girl, Isabelle Armand, arrives from France. Isabelle's appearance, dancing ability, and academic talents are dauntingly perfect. She is also rude and antisocial with both the girls and the boys at the school. But Ellie soon realizes that there is sadness behind Isabelle's anger, and she makes it her mission to break down Isabelle's hostility. The impending ballet appraisal, which determines whether students can continue at the school the next year, increases everyone's tension. Ellie's resolute effort to master a difficult step draws Isabelle's help and dissolves Ellie's jealousy. Her goodhearted effort to show the others that Isabelle needs their friendship soon leads to the once-shunned girl becoming a valued member of the class. Most chapters include brief entries in Ellie's diary, and a helpful glossary of ballet terms is found at the end of the book. This title is part of "The Royal Ballet School Diaries" series. 2005, Grosset & Dunlap/Penguin, Ages 8 to 12.
