Overview

The twins Thaues and Taous really lived two thousand years ago in ancient Egypt. The girls came from a poor family and their lives were very hard until one day a priest from the temple came to see them.

He gave the girls a wonderful chance - to play the parts of the twin goddesses Isis and Nephthys in a great temple ritual. But first they had to learn about Isis and her husband Osiris and all the magical things that happened to them and top the other Egyptian gods…..

An Egyptian legend in which twin sisters who lived 2000 years ago were changed forever when they participated in a temple ritual reenacting the lives of Isis and Osiris.

Children's Literature - Alexandria LaFaye

Using the framing tale of a fictional account of real-life twin sisters who acted as goddesses and/or singers in ritual ceremonies at the temples of Saqqara, Harris provides readers with a unique look into Egypt's history and mythology. Focusing on Isis and Osiris, the book tells the stories (among others) of how the world was created, how the godly couple were born and married, and how their son ascended the throne to become the first king of Egypt. Providing a brief overview of Egyptian mythology, this book also provides some historical insight into ancient Egypt through sidebars featuring photographs of artifacts and brief descriptive passages. This book joins a nice collection of mythology texts as a part of the "Looking at Myths and Legends" series.

Gr 6-8Two novelizations of classic myths. In Isis, set 2000 years ago, twins Taous and Thaues are rescued from poverty by an Egyptian priest, with the hope that they will play the parts of Isis and her sister Nephthys in a re-enactment of the burial of Osiris. To prepare them for their roles, the priest teaches them about Isis, her marriage to her brother Osiris, and Osiris's murder by his jealous brother Seth. In Land of the Five Suns, Stone Turtle uses Creation myths and tales of Aztec gods to distract his younger brother, Two Rabbit Leaping Frog, in order to keep him out of trouble. The narrator also explains the origins of music, corn, and chocolate. This story is set in the early 1500s, just as Spaniards and Aztecs were encountering one another for the first time. Both titles have attractive, full-color photos of artwork and artifacts originating from each culture. Unfortunately, it is difficult to tell the original stories from the myths, a flaw that is sure to confuse or mislead children.Cathryn A. Camper, Minneapolis Public Library
