Gr 4-6 This overview of Israel includes some history and contemporary politics; a dollop of social customs and travel information; and a taste of the flavor of the country, figuratively and literally. Recipes are given for humus, eggplant salad, and chicken soup. None of the information is covered in much depth. One chapter, for example, covers in words and photographs different housing styles, youth groups, Israeli foods, and the Sabbath. A detailed index, a glossary with pronunciation, a list of Israeli consulates in the United States and Canada, and a short bibliography add to the book's usefulness. The photographs, which are mostly in color, contribute to its attractiveness. Israel (Childrens, 1987) by Helen Hinckley Jones has more detailed coverage of the history and geography, but Taitz' book has more about the culture and everyday life. Both titles are useful, if not inspired, for reports and young travelers. Amy Kellman, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh
