Overview

From the story behind the crack in the Liberty Bell to the tale of how a small leak triggered the Three Mile Island nuclear disaster, It Happened in Pennsylvania takes readers on a behind-the-scenes look at intriguing people and episodes from the Keystone State's past.
Here you'll find out whether or not the Battle of Gettysburg was an attempt by Confederates to capture shoes, and how Frank W. Woolworth nickel-and-dimed his way to purchasing the Woolworth building for $13.2 million-cash. You'll meet the engineer who turned a spring into a popular toy, the doctor who spontaneously combusted, and the World War II-era Pittsburgh-Philadelphia football team called the Steagles.
In an easy-to-read style that's entertaining and informative, authors Fran Capo and Scott Bruce recount twenty-eight of the most captivating and unusual moments from Pennsylvania's history.

From Barnes & Noble

Comedian Fran Capo has won Guinness Book recognition as the world's fastest-talking female, but her ability to utter 603 words a minute (that's 10 words a second!) may be less impressive than her mastery of weird and wonderful Pennsylvania history. In this fascinating book, she and coauthor Scott Bruce waltz us through 30 events in Keystone State history, from Pennsylvania's only witch trial to the Conspiracy of 1803 to "the lost children of the Alleghenies."

KLIATT

This engaging little book contains 28 short (five to six page) accounts of events that occurred in Pennsylvania, starting with how the Liberty Bell got its crack and ending with the plane that went down in a Pennsylvania field on 9/11. In between, the reader will learn not only about the drilling of the first oil well in Titusville and the strategies of the generals at Gettysburg, but also about how Punxsutawney Phil became a season forecaster, how the Slinky was invented, and how Penn State came to have the Nittany Lion as its mascot. Disasters, too, occurred in Pennsylvania: the Johnstown flood; the Price-Pancoast coal mine fire; Three Mile Island. While each chapter is well researched, each story is told with an upbeat twist that makes it entertaining as well as informative. A map of Pennsylvania locates all events and a "potpourri" of facts accompanies the text.
