From morning till night, babies experience so many new objects and activities. That means lots of new words to learn! Now, this bold, bright first word book can help: It features all things big and small, fun and familiar. Wonderful, whimsical illustrations depict everything from "Getting Ready for the Day" words ("drink milk," "off to day care") to "Good Night, Baby!" phrases ("brush teeth," "hug a blanket") and more.Publishers Weekly -
In a series of cartoon-filled spreads that span wake-up to tuck-in, Haley (When You Were a Baby) surveys all there is to do and see in a very young child's day. There's no story, just concepts. For the spread entitled "Lunch Time," for example, an array of labeled watercolor-and-ink spot illustrations includes cherries, noodles, pizza, a bowl and spoon; simply captioned vignettes range from "messy baby" to "have a picnic" and "share a cookie." Haley's cartoon style is sweet but somewhat bland. However, she includes a variety of experiences (being at home with mom or dad, participating in day care/preschool) and different kinds of families. It's easy to imagine a parent and child poring over these pages together. Ages 6 mos.-3 yrs. (Apr.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.Children's Literature
Here is another first word or phrase identification/association book for babies. Each page is broken down into a specific time of day and depicts labeled activities that babies will be mostly familiar with. It is brightly illustrated with cute, cartoonish illustrations, but it doesn't really offer anything new or exciting. The cover of the book is padded which makes it softer and more enticing for babies to grab and the binding is reinforced. While, the book doesn't strike my fancy, my one-year-old is interested in it when it is lying about. 2001, Little Brown, $12.95. Ages 3 mo. to 2. Reviewer: Trina HeidtSchool Library Journal
PreS-Haley takes readers on a walk through a baby's day, from the time a child wakes up until bedtime. Double-page spreads-"Getting Ready for the Day," "Play Time," "Out and About," "Friends"-portray a flurry of activity featuring the baby and other family members as well as familiar objects and food items. The colorful scenes are vivid and energetic. In fact, there tends to be too much going on to keep infants interested while trying to verbalize the concepts. At the same time, the book is too babyish for toddlers or older kids who could follow all of the chaotic activity. A mismatch of content and intended audience.-Sheryl L.
