Overview

Although J.R.R. Tolkien is best known as the author of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, he was also an accomplished and prolific illustrator. He always minimized his talents as an artist, but in fact he had a highly developed sense of design, and his graphics have charmed generations of readers.

Though not a catalogue raisonné this book collects much of Tolkien's art—a surprising amount of which survives today. In addition to illustrations for his Middle Earth stories, we are treated to his early paintings and sketches and a delightful collection of pictures made for his own children. Particularly charming are Tolkien's "Father Christmas" letters and the illustrations for the story of Mr. Bliss. Whimsical, imaginative, and skillfully rendered, these works reveal another, equally inventive side to one of the most gifted fantasy writers of all time. 8 1/2" x 11". Color & b&w illustrations.
