School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-This biography of the contemporary African-American athlete covers her early years in East St. Louis, her college career at UCLA, her Olympic successes as a long jumper and heptathlete, and her personal life. Black-and-white photographs highlight her accomplishments. A page listing her gold-medal performances at the Seoul and Barcelona Olympics and personal bests proves her philosophy of ``desire, dedication, and determination.'' The book has short chapters, large print, and crisp sentences. This is a briefer but more smoothly written book than Neil Cohen's Jackie Joyner-Kersee (Little, 1992), and is intended for younger readers.-Janice C. Hayes, Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreeboro
