The search for the Northwest Passage began shortly after Christopher Columbus discovered the New World. Cartier was sent on his first voyage to the New World by the French King, Francois I, in 1534 to find a northern sea route to Asia. In all, Cartier made three voyages for the French king and these expeditions led to the establishment of such places as Montreal and Quebec City in Canada. Chapters provide information about the search for the Northwest Passage, the difficulties in settling the territories in the northern part of the New World, the search for supposed riches in the area, the natives that were friendly, befriended, and unfriendly, as well as life at sea and the hardships that followed the explorers. A title in the series "In the Footsteps of Explorers," this book includes illustrations, photographs, a simple time line, a glossary, and an index that will provide the reader with an overview of the time period in which Jacques Cartier was exploring the New World. On the downside, it has only two minor maps, leaving the reader to find the information elsewhere. The quick information sidebars and inserts included with longer entries offer the reader a quick or detailed look at this special time in North American history.Book Details
