James Monroe was wounded in the Revolutionary War before he turned twenty and elected to the Senate at the age of thirty-two. During Jefferson's presidency. Monroe helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase, then under Madison, he served as secretary of state and secretary of war at the same time! As the fifth president, he arranged the purchase of the Florida Territory from Spain and announced the Monroe Doctrine, warning European nations that the United States would oppose interference in the affairs of North or South America. He actively supported westward expansion as five new states joined the Union.
