Jane Goodall

JANE GOODALL was born in London on April 3, 1934 and grew up in Bournemouth, on the southern coast of England. In 1960 she began studying chimpanzees in the wild in Gombe, Tanganyika (now Tarzania). After receiving her doctorate in ethology at Cambridge University, Dr. Goodall founded the Gombe Stream Research Center for the study of chimpanzees and baboons. In 1975 she established the Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education, and Conservation to promote animal research throughout the world.

School Library Journal

Gr 4-8 --These attractive additions to the series follow an established formula of 12 short chapters illustrated with maps, drawings, and colorful photographs. The evolutionary chart in each volume is an example of the pitfalls of such standardized organization; it may be useful for some species, but not for others. In spite of the series title, Goodall's contribution is simply a one-page introduction to each book. Included in each volume is the address of Goodall's Institute for Wildlife Research. Although geared to school reports and full of clearly presented and interesting information, none of the books has an index or glossary. And while distinguished by their emphasis on conservation (with chapters on current efforts being made to protect each species in the wild), this series is clearly an additional purchase. --Ruth S. Vose, San Francisco Public Library
