Children's Literature

An excellent book for budding scientists. Do you want to know if an egg will absorb water or what is the difference between an emulsion and a homogeneous mixture? These are three of twenty simple experiments given in Molecules. Each experiment leads the child carefully through all the steps necessary to answer the question posed. The materials used are readily available. The author makes suggestions for making a science fair display and leads the young scientists to do careful work and explore further. VanCleave is a former elementary school science teacher. Part of the "Spectacular Science Projects" series.

School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-- Three books that do a good job of introducing students to the scientific process. A concept is introduced with a problem, procedures, and result. An explanation of the results, further explorations, science-fair experiments based on the conclusions, and a topic for further research are included. The experiments are easy without being simplistic; the materials are not elaborate (straws, marbles, scissors); the directions are clear; and the procedures are safe. With black-and-white cartoon illustrations throughout, these would be useful in classrooms as well as school or public libraries.-- Tina Smith Entwistle, Oakley Park Elementary School, MI
