Synopsis

Provides an overview of the country of Japan, its geography, history, government, people, culture, and social issues.

School Library Journal

Gr 4-8Two attractive series entries. Half of each book is devoted to a standard overview of its countrys geography, history, government/economy, people, language, arts, leisure/festivals, and cuisine. A middle section then provides A Closer Look at the nation. China touches on topics such as Confucius, the place of women in society, secret societies, the Silk Road, Tiananmen Square, and Tibet. Recent events such as the British handover of Hong Kong and the ongoing Three Gorges Dam project are also covered. Japan highlights the Ainu (aboriginal people of Japan), atomic bombs, comics, etiquette, sumo wrestling, and sushi. Both titles conclude with a look at relations with North America, maps, and a section of fast facts. Throughout both titles, the spare text is supplemented by excellent-quality, full-color photographs. Students will find the books handy for assignments; however, the dry, conventional packaging will limit their appeal to utilitarian purposes.Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
