Gr 6-9 This history of Japan basically covers the period from the arrival of the first Europeans to its mid-20th-Century development into a leading industrial nation. Roberson begins with a glossary of Japanese terms and a note on the Japanese language. The writing is clear and concise and is at a level that average junior high students should be able to understand. This book is more thorough than most books for this age group. Black-and-white photographs and reproductions are interspersed throughout. An excellent place for students just beginning to familiarize themselves with Japan's history to start gathering information. James Steed, Robert Frost Junior High School, Schaumburg, Ill.
