Overview
This book, first published in 1977 and extensively updated and rewritten for this third edition, provides a short introduction to Japanese economic development. It stresses the importance of non-economic factors in Japan's success, especially those relating to its institutions and social structure which have produced a unique management system and a strong work ethic. Yoshihara places greater emphasis than in previous editions on Japan's ability to blend modern values and institutions with those from the pre-modern period as a major reason for its economic achievements.
